Hello, movie lovers!

Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter!

In our latest podcast episode, we tackled the big question: does 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actually hold up after 20 years? We rewatched Tim Burton's whimsical take on Roald Dahl's beloved story to see if it's as good as we remembered—or if time has been less kind to Johnny Depp's quirky Wonka and those dazzling chocolate waterfalls. Was this colorful adventure really as good as everyone thought back in 2005, or does it feel different through today's lens? We dig into what worked, what didn't, and whether nostalgia is sweeter than the movie itself.

Plus, we've found some amazing deals on movie posters from MoviePoster.com, Amazon, and more—check them out!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

In the 2005 adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," young Charlie Bucket lives in poverty with his family near Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory. When Wonka announces a contest offering five golden tickets hidden in chocolate bars that will grant winners a factory tour, Charlie miraculously finds the last ticket. Along with four other children - the gluttonous Augustus Gloop, spoiled Veruca Salt, competitive Violet Beauregarde, and TV-obsessed Mike Teavee - Charlie enters Wonka's fantastical factory filled with edible landscapes and bizarre inventions. As the tour progresses, each of the other children's character flaws lead to their dramatic removal from the group through various chocolatey mishaps, leaving only the kind-hearted Charlie. Wonka, impressed by Charlie's goodness and integrity, ultimately offers him the chance to inherit the factory, though Charlie initially hesitates because it would mean leaving his family behind. The story explores themes of family, morality, and the consequences of greed while showcasing Wonka's eccentric personality and the magical world he's created.

But how would we rate it?

Isaac's Rating

Hide it in the attic!

“This was my first time viewing it, and sadly I was disappointed. To me this is the worst Johnny Depp role I have seen him in. I am not fan of his take on the famous Willy Wonka. CGI also did not age well. You’re better off watching the 1971 classic."

Seth's Rating

Leave it at Grandma’s

“I try to think this might have been its generation’s favorite telling of this story, at least to some. The casting in my opinion is great but I felt it was a bit too updated."
