Wonka (2023)
In the 2023 "Wonka" prequel starring Timothée Chalamet, a young and poor Willy Wonka arrives in Europe with dreams of opening a chocolate shop in the Galeries Gourmet, a city renowned for its chocolate. However, he discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers who control the market and try to prevent him from succeeding. Burning through his meager savings, he is coerced to stay at Mrs. Scrubitt's boarding house where he becomes trapped by exploitative contracts along with other residents. Despite these obstacles, the young inventor and magician uses his creativity and amazing chocolate creations to fight against the chocolate cartel's monopoly. The film serves as a prequel that explores Wonka's origins, from his first encounter with the Oompa Loompas to founding his deliciously magnificent headquarters. The story shows how the 22-year-old aspiring chocolatier ultimately overcomes the corrupt system, with the credits revealing his friends returning to their normal lives while the villainous Mrs. Scrubitt and her accomplice are arrested. This musical origin story explains how Willy Wonka became the legendary candy maker before establishing his famous chocolate factory.
But how would we rate it?
![]() | Isaac's Rating Watch it at Grandma’s “I enjoyed the fun nods to the classic 1971 film and the characters. Overall it just felt like a lot was left on the table. I’ll revisit eventually, but for now I feel like it’s just ok." |
Seth's Rating Hide it in the Attic! “It had some good moments, but it felt long and lacked the charm of the original. Of all the movies we’ve covered so far I don’t recall losing interest as much as this one.” | ![]() |
