Hello, Movie Lovers!
Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! Season 4 continues! In our latest podcast episode, we asked: Does Treasure Planet (2002) chart a course to animated adventure, or does it get lost in space?
This sci-fi reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic takes us on a cosmic voyage where teenage troublemaker Jim Hawkins joins a motley crew aboard the RLS Legacy in search of the legendary Treasure Planet, forming an unexpected bond with the cyborg cook John Silver—a charismatic mentor figure with his own hidden agenda. We dive into Disney's ambitious blend of traditional and CGI animation, the film's surprisingly emotional father-son dynamic between Jim and Silver, and whether this spacefaring treasure hunt delivers both breathtaking visuals and genuine heart as Jim transforms from a directionless kid into a confident young man—proving that sometimes the greatest treasure isn't gold, but finding someone who believes in you.

Treasure Planet (2002)
Treasure Planet (2002) might be Disney's most underrated movie... or its most overrated flop. We're finally reviewing this space pirate adventure to settle the debate once and for all! Disney spent $140 million turning Treasure Island into a sci-fi epic with robot pirates, solar surfing, and some of the most stunning animation of the early 2000s. But it bombed at the box office and nearly killed traditional animation at Disney. So what happened?

Take it Home!
“As soon as this started I was drawn in. It’s a timeless story that many have tried to capture. They somehow gave the concept a fun new take that I love. Great characters, world building and humor throughout. Not to mention the action really captures your imagination. Watch this now!"
Seth's Rating
Watch it at Grandma’s
“I watched it twice and it grew on me. I liked the sci-fi adaption, but it wasn't a great film to me in my opinion. So, I will watch this one at Grandma's hopefully soon.”
