This cult classic from the height of turtle mania stars four heroes in a half shell as they battle the Foot Clan and their mysterious leader, The Shredder. We dive into its groundbreaking puppetry and animatronics, memorable one-liners like "Cowabunga!" and "Turtle Power!", and whether this darker take on the beloved cartoon still delivers pizza-fueled excitement for today's families—or if it's best left buried in the sewers of the past.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a martial arts adventure that follows four mutant reptiles who emerge from the sewers of New York to protect the city from crime. After being transformed by radioactive ooze and trained in the ancient art of ninjutsu by their rat sensei Master Splinter, the turtles—Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael—find themselves caught up in a web of mystery and danger.
Things escalate when ace reporter April O'Neil becomes entangled in their world, and the turtles discover that the ruthless Shredder and his army of Foot Clan ninjas are recruiting the city's youth into a criminal empire. But when Master Splinter is kidnapped and their very existence is threatened, the four brothers must use their unique blend of teenage attitude and ninja skills to save their sensei. With groundbreaking Jim Henson creature effects, intense martial arts action, and classic '90s grittiness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles delivers a shell-shocking story about family, honor, and fighting for what's right—with a side of extra cheese pizza.
But how would we rate it?
![]() | Isaac's Rating Watch it at Grandma’s “It takes me back to the 90’s for sure. It is entertaining, and has its moments. Downside is more language and adult themes than I remember though." |
Seth's Rating Watch it at Grandma’s “I was hoping to give this a lot of praise, but it shows its age at times and more adult themes at the end of the day. So I’ll watch this one at Grandma’s.” | ![]() |
