The Sound of Music (1965)

In 1930s Austria, the free-spirited and music-loving Maria arrives at the grand villa of Captain Georg von Trapp to serve as governess for his seven children—Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and Gretl. The widowed Captain runs his household like a naval ship with strict discipline, whistles for training the children, and has forbidden music in the home since his wife's death.

Maria immediately clashes with the Captain's rigid methods but quickly wins over the lonely children by teaching them to sing, making them play clothes from old curtains, and taking them on adventures around Salzburg. As Maria brings joy and warmth back into the household, the Captain begins to soften and rediscover his love of music and life.

However, their growing bond is complicated by the Captain's engagement to the sophisticated Baroness Elsa Schraeder, and the family faces an increasingly dangerous political situation as Austria comes under pressure from Nazi Germany. The von Trapps must navigate matters of the heart while their beloved homeland faces a crisis that will force them to make difficult choices about their future and their values.

How would we rate it?

Isaac's Rating

Watch it at Grandma’s

“I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I admit musicals aren’t my thing, but the music is well done and Julie Andrews is charming as usual as Maria. It will still be a while before I revisit, and I will take advantage of the intermission by today’s outlook with movies, but if you enjoy older musicals this is a good time."

Seth's Rating

Hide it in the Attic

“Personally, I think that if this were released today with the same production value, it wouldn't perform as well as it did back then. And I've said that with similar older films we've covered. I just don't think in today's standards it would be the same, which is probably true. It's an okay movie with some great songs, but I have to hide this in the attic. It wasn't for me.”
