Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the second edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we're diving into our podcast vault to spotlight films that deserve another moment in the sun.
This week, we're lacing up our skates for the 1992 sports classic, The Mighty Ducks. This feel-good underdog story follows Gordon Bombay, a hotshot lawyer sentenced to community service coaching a hopeless pee-wee hockey team. What starts as a punishment becomes a journey of redemption as Bombay and his ragtag group of kids—from anxious goalie Goldberg to the chaotic Bash Brothers—learn that teamwork and heart can triumph over talent and privilege.
We gave this one a solid 4 out of 5 stars! Seth loved this growing up and it still hits just as hard today, while Isaac recalls it being one of those VHS tapes that was constantly rented out at every Blockbuster in the '90s. Yes, it's cheesy—the "Ducks fly together" speeches are pure cornball—but that earnestness is exactly what makes it work. It's comfort food cinema that's quotable, rewatchable, and packed with enough heart to make you actually care about whether these kids can pull off the triple deke. A stone-cold '90s classic that launched a thousand youth hockey leagues and even an actual NHL team.
