Hello, Movie Lovers!
Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! Season 4 continues!
In our latest podcast episode, we asked: Does Free Willy (1993) make a splash with its heartwarming story, or does it sink under the weight of sentiment? With special guest Zach Milne sharing his memories and thoughts!
This family drama takes us to a struggling Pacific Northwest marine park, where troubled foster kid Jesse forms an unlikely bond with Willy, a recently captured orca whale who refuses to perform for crowds, leading to a powerful friendship that transforms both their lives as Jesse discovers purpose and Willy finds hope.
We dive into this emotional tale of connection and freedom, the film's surprisingly mature themes about captivity and belonging alongside genuine chemistry between boy and whale, and whether this story of redemption and liberation delivers both tender moments and thrilling adventure as Jesse must choose between following the rules and doing what's right for his friend—proving that sometimes love means letting go, even when it breaks your heart.

Free Willy (1993)
Twelve-year-old Jesse is a troubled orphan and petty vandal bouncing through the foster care system, recently placed with kind-hearted foster parents Glen and Annie Greenwood who are trying to reach the angry and distrustful boy. After Jesse and his friends vandalize the Northwest Adventure Park, a struggling marine amusement park, he's caught and sentenced to clean up the damage as community service. While working at the park, Jesse encounters Willy, a massive orca whale who was recently captured and separated from his family, and who refuses to perform tricks or cooperate with trainers, making him a financial liability for the park's greedy owner Dial. Against all odds, Jesse and Willy form a deep connection—the lonely boy and the captive whale recognize something in each other, and Jesse discovers he has a unique ability to communicate with and calm Willy. As Jesse opens up to his foster family and finds purpose through his friendship with Willy, he learns that the park owner plans to harm Willy for insurance money, forcing Jesse to make a desperate choice about whether to risk everything to save his friend and return him to the ocean and his family where he belongs.
How would we rate it?

Isaac's Rating
Watch it at Grandma’s
“I had such a great time revisiting this. So many memories came flooding back, I watched this a lot growing up but it had been years. My children enjoyed it too, which makes me recommend it as a great family flick to get out from time to time."
Seth's Rating
Watch it at Grandma’s
“To say there's some holes in the plot would be an understatement. However, I managed to have quite a bit of nostalgia with this one. I'm happy to revisit it soon, so it's a higher tier I would say of of watching at grandma's.”
