MOVIES AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE NEWSLETTER

Hello, Movie Lovers!

Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the thirteenth edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we continue exploring our podcast catalog—and this week, we're diving into one of Hollywood's most infamous video game adaptations.

This week, we're jumping down the pipe with the 1993 live-action disaster, Super Mario Bros. When Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi get sucked into a parallel dimension, they discover a dystopian world ruled by the evil King Koopa, a de-evolved dinosaur dictator who's kidnapped a young woman named Daisy. Now the brothers must navigate this bizarre fungus-covered reality to save her and stop Koopa's plans to merge his world with ours.

We gave this one a modest 2 out of 5 stars. Let's be clear: this is not a good movie, and it's barely a Mario movie. Instead of the colorful, whimsical Mushroom Kingdom, we get a dark, grimy cyberpunk world that feels more like a sci-fi movie more than anything from Nintendo. The production was notoriously troubled, and it shows. Goombas are tiny-headed lizard men, there's fungus everywhere, and none of it makes sense. Isaac agrees it's a mess and not really Mario at all—but outside of some adult themes, he had a surprisingly fun time watching it with his kids and seeing their reactions to this bizarre interpretation. Sometimes a movie being spectacularly wrong is its own kind of entertainment. A legendary disaster worth seeing once, if only to believe it exists.

Plus, we've found some amazing deals on movie posters from MoviePoster.com, Amazon, and more—check them out!

Isaac's Rating

Hide it in the Attic

“I admit this oozes 90’s nostalgia, but….it is a bad movie through and through. Maybe so bad it’s good kind of a thing, but I think most will lose interest with this one if they decide to watch. I had a great time watching it with my kids, however, and seeing their ‘WHAT?!’ reactions to the insanity was priceless. But if you’re expecting a Mario Bros. movie you’ll need to look elsewhere."

Seth's Rating

Hide it in the Attic

“I watched this twice for the rewatch, and each time it was torture. I tried to enjoy it, maybe there are fun parts here and there. But there are plot holes, and knowing the story of production doesn’t help matters.”
