MOVIES AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE NEWSLETTER
Hello, Movie Lovers!
Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! Season 4 continues! In our latest podcast episode, we asked: Does Madagascar (2005) roar with comedic brilliance, or does it get lost in the wild?
This animated adventure takes us from New York City's Central Park Zoo to the shores of Madagascar, where pampered zoo animals Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo find themselves shipwrecked on the exotic island after Marty's dream of experiencing the wild leads to a chaotic escape attempt. We dive into DreamWorks' colorful debut of this franchise, the film's fish-out-of-water humor as luxury-loving zoo animals face the realities of actual wilderness, and whether this tale of friendship and survival delivers both laugh-out-loud slapstick and surprising heart as Alex struggles with his predatory instincts while the group learns what it truly means to live in the wild—proving that sometimes home isn't a place, but the friends you're with.

Madagascar (2005)
At New York's Central Park Zoo, four best friends live comfortable lives as the zoo's star attractions—Alex the lion is the beloved showman, Marty the zebra dreams of life beyond the zoo, Melman the giraffe is a lovable hypochondriac, and Gloria the hippo keeps the group grounded. On Marty's tenth birthday, his longing to experience "the wild" leads him to escape the zoo with help from a crew of scheming penguins, prompting Alex, Melman, and Gloria to chase after him through Grand Central Station. The chaos results in all four animals being captured and shipped off to a wildlife preserve in Africa, but their crates accidentally fall off the cargo ship during a penguin hijacking, washing ashore on the island of Madagascar. The pampered zoo animals must now navigate actual wilderness for the first time, encountering a kingdom of lemurs led by the eccentric King Julien and facing the harsh realities of survival. As the group struggles to adapt and find a way home, Alex begins experiencing unsettling predatory instincts toward his friends, forcing them all to confront what it really means to be wild animals and whether they can maintain their friendship in this new, dangerous environment.

Watch it at Grandma’s
“This is a funny and original movie. So much to like between the jokes, animation, concept and fun you’ll have with a bunch of escaped animals from the NY zoo ending up in Madagascar. I feel like it’s a perfect movie to revisit every once and while, but this is a great time whenever."
