MOVIES AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE NEWSLETTER
Hello, Movie Lovers!
Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the nineteenth edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we continue exploring films from our podcast—and this week, we're shrinking down to experience the backyard like never before.
This week, we're getting miniaturized with the 1989 family adventure, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. When eccentric inventor Wayne Szalinski's shrinking machine accidentally zaps his kids and the neighbors' children down to a quarter-inch tall, they're swept outside with the trash and find themselves lost in their own backyard—now a massive, dangerous jungle. With towering grass blades, giant insects, and everyday objects turned into monumental obstacles, the kids must survive the perilous journey back to the house while their parents desperately search for them.
We gave this one a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars! This high-concept '80s adventure takes a simple premise and runs wild with it, delivering inventive family filmmaking at its best. The special effects hold up surprisingly well, and the creativity on display—riding a bee, nearly drowning in a sprinkler, navigating around a lawnmower—makes you genuinely feel the scale of their predicament. Isaac remembers so much about this movie growing up, including the incredible playground at Disney World that let kids experience being shrunk down. However, the film gets unexpectedly dark at times. The scorpion attack is genuinely intense, and when Anty the ant dies saving the kids, it hits harder than you'd expect. There are real moments of peril that might be a bit much for younger family members. Still, it's a fun ride with heart, humor, and impressive imagination.
Plus, we've found some amazing deals on movie posters from MoviePoster.com, Amazon, and more—check them out!

Isaac's Rating
Watch it at Grandma’s
“This was a family favorite growing up. I still quote it often to this day. It was a fun time revisiting but it felt bittersweet too. Dark moments might have played a part now looking at them with adult eyes, but I still hold this up as a classic. It’s just one I may not watch all the time."

“It’s a family comedy that doesn’t age quite as well as I’d hoped…But still nostalgic overload.”
