MAGH: What’s the story behind MoviePosters.com? When did it start, and what drew you to the business?
David: MoviePosters.com actually started way back in the ‘60s with my family running a theatre exchange in Toronto. Studios would send posters to promote movies, and once the film was done, theatres would return them. Instead of tossing them, my family started collecting and selling them. Fast forward a few decades, I took over, modernized things, and built it into one of the largest online poster shops in the world. I grew up around posters, so it was kind of a natural fit for me—it’s a mix of nostalgia, art, and pop culture all in one.
MAGH: Thats’s awesome! How has the business changed since you first opened, and what has stayed the same?
David: The biggest change is definitely technology. We went from local theatre swaps and mail-order lists to running a huge online store that ships worldwide. But what’s stayed the same is the passion. People still get the same thrill hanging up a poster of their favorite movie today as they did 40 years ago. That part never changes.
MAGH: What makes your website different from other poster websites?
David: We actually stock what we sell. A lot of sites are middlemen, but we have a massive warehouse of original and reproduction posters ready to ship. Plus, we’re family-run—we still care about the details like packaging so your poster arrives perfect. You won’t get that level of personal touch on Amazon.
MAGH: That’s really cool! Do you have custom framing and other features?
David : Yes, we do. We offer custom framing, canvas prints, and even protective sleeves if you want to keep your poster mint. It’s all about giving people options to either collect or decorate.
MAGH: That is a must for keeping them in good condition. What role do you feel you play in the local community?
David: We’ve always been part of Toronto’s film scene. Over the years, we’ve supported film students, independent theatres, local festivals, and even schools decorating classrooms. Posters are such an accessible way to connect with movies, and we love helping keep that culture alive locally.
MAGH: That’s great! Have you ever had any famouse vistors or hosted special premieres that surprised you?
David: Oh yeah—over the years we’ve had directors, actors, and collectors pop in. Some are looking for a piece from their first film, others just want a cool poster for their office. We’ve also provided posters for film premieres and even museum exhibits. It’s always fun to see where they end up. We've been featured on Oprah's favorite things and have partnered with the Oscar museum in LA!
MAGH: That’s incredible! Finally, what’s been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
David: Honestly, the biggest challenge has been adapting to change—whether it’s shifts in e-commerce, new shipping rules, or the ups and downs of the movie industry. We’ve gotten through it by staying flexible, investing in good tech, and keeping that personal, small-business approach. At the end of the day, people love movies—and as long as we keep that passion front and center, we figure the rest out.
MAGH: Very cool. We appreciate your time!
