Do red cars cost more to insure?

You may have heard the myth that red cars cost more to insure, often with varying reasons why. The truth is, the color of your car has nothing to do with your premium. Insurance companies are more interested in your vehicle’s make, model, age, safety features, and your driving history. What’s not a myth, though — is that people really can save a ton of money by switching insurers. Check out Money’s car insurance tool to see if you could, too.

Q&A With Dixie Twin Drive-In!

Dear Movie Lover,

We're excited to continue our brand new series at Movies at Grandma's House! In our continuing mission to celebrate the places and people that make our community special, we're bringing you another edition of "Grandma's Q&A" – intimate conversations with the local businesses and organizations that add character to our neighborhoods.

For this interview, we sat down with the team at Dixie Twin Drive-In located in Dayton, Ohio. This beloved outdoor cinema has been a cornerstone of the community's entertainment scene, keeping the nostalgic drive-in tradition alive. From their commitment to bringing both blockbusters and family favorites under the stars, to the personal touches that make every visit feel like a trip back in time, Dixie Twin Drive-In embodies the spirit of local business we love to highlight.

So grab your favorite movie snacks (or maybe save room for some from Dixie Twin's concession stand!) and settle in as we dive into what makes this special drive-in tick. We think you'll enjoy getting to know the people behind the screen who work hard to bring movie magic to Dayton, Ohio! Enjoy!

MAGH: What's the story behind your theater? When did it open, and what drew you to this location?

Dixie: The Dixie Drive-In opened way back in 1957 and it was started by the Levin brothers Sam, Al & Lou Levin and is still a family business!

MAGH: That’s great! How has your theater changed since you first opened, and what has stayed the same?

Dixie: Well, you always have to keep up with the times, getting better equipment, projector upgrades, film to digital, but the same basic ideas and principals run the drive in as it did when it started.  Showing fun movies under the stars.

MAGH: That’s awesome! What makes watching a movie at your theater different from the big chain cinemas?

Dixie: Well, you get to enjoy a piece of nostalgic history!  With less than 300 drive-in's left, it is a real piece of American movie going history.   Also, we are a lot cheaper than a chain cinema, and we offer a double feature every night, so you're getting 2 movies for the price of 1!

MAGH: That’s a great deal! How do you decide which movies to show? Do you take requests from the community?

Dixie: Booking is an interesting beast.  One of the most important things is to be timely, making sure you're getting the big blockbusters first run and also making room for films that might have gotten glanced over.    Since we have 2 screens, we can have a lot of fun with that, we try to keep things themed and relevant, Horror Films on one screen and maybe more family-oriented films on the other.   We also do a lot of Retro screenings of older films!

MAGH: What role do you feel your theater plays in the local community beyond just showing films?

Dixie: Well, we are offering a great, affordable entertainment outing for couples, families, or cinephiles.

MAGH: Have you ever had any famous visitors or hosted special premieres that surprised you?

Dixie: I have only been the general manager of the Dixie for a year, but yes I have heard of famous actors/directors and such coming here, a regular patron of ours told me he met actor JIM VARNEY (from the ERNEST films) here in the 80's, handing out promotion material for a movie he was in. This past year we did have a visit from pro wrestlers from AEW & TNA Wrestling!

MAGH: That is really cool! What's been your biggest challenge as a small theater owner, and how did you overcome it?

Dixie: Just competing with the big guys with no corporate backing or advertising backing they have,  but you adapt, and you stay relevant, and keep evolving!

MAGH: If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about opening their own small theater, what would it be?

Dixie: Be all in! Be Creative, take chances and bring a good energy.

MAGH: Right on! We appreciate your time!
