MOVIES AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE NEWSLETTER
Hello, Movie Lovers!
Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the thirty-fifth edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we continue exploring films from our podcast—and this week, we're taking a ride in a very special car from classic cinema.
This week, we're flying high (sort of) with the 1968 musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Caractacus Potts is an eccentric inventor who restores a unique car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Along with his two children and the lovely Truly Scrumptious, they embark on an adventure that takes them to a fictional kingdom ruled by a child-hating Baron and Baroness, where they must outsmart the terrifying Child Catcher and save the day.
We gave this one a modest 2.5 out of 5 stars. This lavish, ambitious musical aimed to capture the wonder of Mary Poppins but ends up being a mixed bag through modern eyes. There are fun elements—the musical numbers have charm, the costumes and production design are elaborate and colorful, and songs like "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Truly Scrumptious" are genuinely catchy. Dick Van Dyke brings his usual energy and likability. However, the film is long at nearly two and a half hours, the plot can be genuinely confusing with awkward shifts between reality and fantasy, and some elements feel clunky by today's standards. The pacing drags in spots, and while the Child Catcher is memorable, he's legitimately terrifying in ways that might be too much for younger viewers. It doesn't hold up as well as other classic musicals—fun in parts, but a tough sit overall.
Plus, we've found some amazing deals on movie posters from MoviePoster.com, Amazon, and more—check them out!

Isaac's Rating
Watch it at Grandma’s
“So many memories with this one. Still, I wouldn’t say it is a movie I can come back to often. Seeing it today you notice its flaws a lot more. Not a perfect movie by any means, but if you like musicals and older movie fun, this might be up your alley. Just be warned of the child catcher *shutters*."

Hide it in the Attic
“This movie was actually really hard for me to watch. I liked some scenes but couldn't retain my attention, still that being said I like older films. But it was a hard watch and personally I just don't want to watch it again.”
