MOVIES AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE NEWSLETTER

Hello, Movie Lovers!

Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the twelfth edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we continue revisiting films from our podcast—sometimes with surprising results.

This week, we're cashing in with the 1994 family comedy, Blank Check. When 11-year-old Preston Waters gets hit by a car driven by a criminal, he receives a blank check as hush money. Preston seizes the opportunity, fills it out for a million dollars, and embarks on the ultimate spending spree—buying a mansion, go-karts, a water slide, and living out every kid's wildest fantasy of unlimited money and freedom.

We gave this one a modest 2 out of 5 stars, and here's why: this movie proved to be a rude awakening when revisited as adults. Both Isaac and Seth were genuinely surprised by how dark and inappropriate it gets. There's a romantic subplot between Preston and an adult FBI agent that is deeply uncomfortable to watch now—she flirts with an 11-year-old, they go on a date, and it ends with a kiss that's impossible not to cringe at today. Beyond that, there's criminal violence, money laundering, and surprisingly menacing bad guys for what's supposed to be a lighthearted kids' movie. The tonal whiplash is jarring. It's a fun premise about wish-fulfillment buried under some seriously questionable choices. Sometimes nostalgia is better left in the past.

Plus, we've found some amazing deals on movie posters from MoviePoster.com, Amazon, and more—check them out!

Isaac's Rating

Watch it at Grandma’s

“This was a fun rental movie growing up. The thought of being a kid with what felt like endless money was a cool concept, along with some fun humor. However coming back to this years later there’s some wildly inappropriate themes that make it hard to watch now. Honestly, I was close to hiding it in the attic because of that. There might be some fun, but be advised there are outdated subjects contained."

Seth's Rating

Watch it at Grandma’s

“As a kid I loved this movie but upon rewatch I was shocked it was so cringy. It has fun elements but it didn’t hold up as well as I’d hope.”
