Welcome to this week's Movies at Grandmas House newsletter! We're back with the third edition of "Grandma's Archives" where we continue our journey through the podcast vault to revisit films we've covered over the years.
This week, we're hitting the court with the 1997 family film, Air Bud. When young Josh Framm moves to a new town after losing his father, he's struggling to fit in—until he discovers Buddy, a golden retriever with some serious basketball skills. Together, they form an unlikely bond that helps Josh heal while taking their middle school team to unexpected heights. Oh, and there's an unhinged clown subplot that has to be seen to be believed.
We gave this one a surprising 3.5 out of 5 stars! Here's the thing: both Isaac and Seth actively avoided this movie growing up. A basketball-playing dog? We wanted nothing to do with it. But on this rewatch, we were genuinely surprised by how heartfelt and enjoyable it turned out to be. Beneath the absurd premise is a sincere story about grief, connection, and finding your place in the world. There are legitimately funny moments, solid family fun, and enough genuine emotion to keep you invested even when a golden retriever is draining three-pointers. Sometimes you're just flat-out wrong about a movie—and Air Bud proved us wrong.
